Kearny Mesa residents often find cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) on their pets. These small, reddish-brown insects are about 1/8 inch long and feed on the blood of cats and dogs. Fleas can cause skin irritation, hair loss, and anemia in severe infestations. Cat fleas also bite humans, leaving itchy, red welts that may cause allergic reactions.
The flea’s life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female fleas lay between 20-50 eggs daily, which fall off pets onto carpets and bedding. Larvae feed on organic matter and mature in humid areas. The complete life cycle takes around 18 days, with adult fleas living up to 40 days on the host.
Dog fleas, known by the scientific name Ctenocephalides canis, are parasitic insects that usually infest dogs but can also affect humans and cats. They resemble cat fleas but are less common in California. These reddish-brown, wingless insects are small and difficult to detect. Dog fleas feed on their hosts’ blood, causing itching and discomfort. They can also transmit diseases and parasites such as tapeworms.
The life cycle of dog fleas includes eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. The eggs often fall off the host and land in areas such as bedding or carpets. Larvae feed on organic material and flea excrement. Pupae develop within cocoons, where they may remain dormant for months. Adults live for weeks, constantly feeding and reproducing.
Sticktight fleas commonly infest ground squirrels and poultry, latching onto the ears and eyes of their hosts, which can lead to irritation and health concerns. Pets that roam outdoors in areas with ground squirrels are more at risk. Regularly inspecting pets can help catch infestations early.
It’s important to address both pets and their environment when treating for fleas. Be sure to treat pets and their bedding on the same day. Homes with outdoor pets should inspect and treat both indoor and outdoor areas thoroughly.
Kearny Mesa Pest Control’s flea control process starts with a full inspection of your yard. We check for flea hotspots, particularly in areas where pets spend time, to ensure a targeted treatment approach. Our technicians examine shaded areas and dense vegetation for flea activity.
Indoors, we look at baseboards, cracks, and crevices where fleas may hide. We also inspect pet bedding, carpets, and furniture, covering all potential flea breeding grounds. A thorough inspection ensures an effective flea control plan.
To prepare for our flea treatment, follow these steps. Trim the lawn outside. Indoors, clear all items from the floor, such as toys and mats. Vacuum carpets, closet floors, and under beds, then discard the vacuum bag. Sweep and mop all hard floors. Treat pets and wash their bedding on the same day. The house should be vacant for 2-3 hours while the treatment dries.
Our flea control process begins with a thorough yard inspection, treating flea hotspots up to half an acre. Indoors, liquid treatments are applied to baseboards, cracks, and crevices. Floors may be slippery but dry quickly. Fans can help speed up drying.
At Kearny Mesa Pest Control, we provide a free follow-up treatment two weeks after the initial service to eliminate any newly hatched fleas. This follow-up is crucial to ensure full eradication. Our technician will apply the same comprehensive treatment to all treated areas.
We recommend vacuuming carpets and sweeping floors after the first visit to stimulate flea eggs to hatch. This makes the follow-up treatment even more effective. Additionally, treating pets and keeping their bedding clean is key to preventing re-infestation.
Serving Kearny Mesa and its surrounding communities, we’re dedicated to keeping your spaces pest-free. Our team is passionate about these areas and is focused on providing top-quality service and reliable results.
