The American dog tick, sometimes known as the wood tick, is found throughout the U.S., except in the Rocky Mountain region. These brown ticks with grayish-white markings can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. They are oval-shaped and flat, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
While they generally feed on dogs, they can bite humans and transmit diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The risk of encountering these ticks is higher in spring and early summer. Maintaining a tidy yard and regularly checking pets can help prevent infestations.
Brown Dog Ticks, identified by their reddish-brown appearance, frequently infest dogs and are common in warmer regions like California. When dogs are unavailable, these ticks may bite humans.
These ticks are about 1/8″ long as adults but can grow up to 1/2″ when engorged with blood. They have six legs as larvae and develop eight legs as nymphs and adults. It’s crucial to remove these ticks from pets quickly to prevent potential health issues. Regularly inspecting your pets and maintaining clean environments can help reduce tick infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks thrive in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, including areas in Kearny Mesa. These ticks are most active during cooler months, especially April and May. While adults prefer feeding on large mammals like horses, cattle, and deer, they will also bite dogs and humans.
These ticks can transmit diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Livestock can also be affected by tick-bite paralysis. Around 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria responsible for Pacific Coast tick fever, often mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is commonly seen in Pacific Coast regions, including British Columbia, where it acts as a key carrier of Lyme disease. It is often found in forests, grasslands, and areas near water, and can also inhabit scrub-shrub landscapes. This tick is closely related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick but is primarily located on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active from winter to early summer, and nymphs peak from April to June. Nymphs feed on small animals like lizards and rodents, and rarely bite humans or pets. Keeping your yard free of debris and maintaining vegetation can help reduce tick presence.
Kearny Mesa Pest Control starts its tick control service with a thorough property inspection. Our technician will locate tick-prone areas such as tall grass, dense bushes, and shaded corners, ensuring every potential habitat is identified.
We’ll also check spaces where pets are often found, as these spots are common gathering places for ticks. This detailed inspection ensures that our treatment plan is specifically designed to target your property’s needs, keeping it tick-free.
We begin with a consultation to understand whether you need indoor or outdoor treatments, or a combination of both. For homes with pets, we often recommend covering both areas for the best results. This helps us create a customized plan that addresses your needs.
Next, our technician inspects your yard to find tick hotspots. We apply moisture-activated granules that cover up to half an acre, providing long-lasting protection. If your yard is larger, we can treat additional areas for an additional cost. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer to apply a targeted solution. This ensures that our tick control efforts are effective from the very first treatment.
Following the initial tick treatment, we offer a complimentary two-week follow-up to ensure that any newly hatched ticks are addressed. Our technician will inspect both indoor and outdoor treated areas to confirm complete tick elimination.
Treatments may be reapplied during this visit to prevent future infestations by breaking the tick life cycle. Our aim is to keep your home and yard tick-free, providing a safe space for your family and pets.
Serving Kearny Mesa and its surrounding communities, we’re dedicated to keeping your spaces pest-free. Our team is passionate about these areas and is focused on providing top-quality service and reliable results.
