Blow flies, known for their metallic colors such as green, black, or copper, are larger than typical house flies. These noisy insects lay eggs on rotting meat, with larvae developing into adults in 7 to 15 days. They are commonly found around garbage, pet droppings, and spoiled food, making them a concern for homes and businesses alike.
The Oriental latrine fly, a blow fly species, has been causing issues in Southern California since 1989. These flies gather near trash bins and shaded areas during summer months. Larvae located near homes may enter indoors to pupate, resulting in adult flies indoors. Keeping waste properly managed and maintaining cleanliness are essential steps to prevent blow fly infestations.
The little house fly (Fannia canicularis) has a recognizable flight style, typically moving in mid-air without landing on food, reducing the chance of food contamination.
They lay their eggs in decomposing plant material, compost, or animal waste from pets like rabbits or chickens. Their life cycle spans about 24 days, from egg to adult. While they can be annoying, their attraction to decaying matter means they pose less of a risk indoors.
Muscina stabulans, or the false stable fly, is a bit larger and sturdier than a typical house fly. Its dark gray body makes it distinguishable. While it doesn’t bite like the true stable fly, it can still enter homes to lay eggs on mildly spoiled food.
The larvae thrive in decomposing plant matter and animal excrement. The false stable fly’s life cycle lasts about 14 days. While it doesn’t bite, its presence indoors can be frustrating, especially when it lays eggs. Knowing its habits is key for managing infestations effectively.
The black garbage fly is a small, shiny insect about 1/5″ in size. These slender flies thrive in garbage, especially in rural areas where waste collection isn’t consistent. Though not commonly found in large numbers in cities, they are more prevalent in areas with poor waste practices.
Their life cycle lasts about ten days, allowing them to multiply quickly. Proper waste disposal is crucial to keeping them at bay.
Stable flies might resemble house flies, but they have a sharp beak for biting. They feed on animals like cattle and horses but will bite humans, especially when they come indoors during rainy weather.
These pests are more than just an annoyance; they affect pets and livestock. Stable flies breed in damp environments, particularly where decaying organic matter and manure are present. Proper waste management can help control their population.
Flesh flies (Sarcophaga species) are bigger than house flies and are distinguished by their checkered abdomens. Their bodies are gray with black stripes across the thorax. Rather than laying eggs, flesh flies deposit live maggots. The maggots are often found in rotting meat, dead animals, and dog droppings. Flesh flies are frequently spotted near carcasses and decaying snails.
The flesh fly’s life cycle can take just eight days. They are usually found near decaying organic matter. If you see large, slow-moving flies with a checkered abdomen, a flesh fly problem could be present.
Our fly control service begins with a complete inspection of your property to find breeding sites. We check drains, trash zones, and areas with standing water or decaying material, looking for species like blow flies, drain flies, and stable flies.
We also inspect plumbing for leaks or blockages that can attract flies. Using advanced tools, we locate larvae and adults in hidden areas. This detailed process helps us develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific fly problem.
Please clean the indoor and outdoor areas before our technician’s arrival to help us accurately target the fly infestation. Our team will inspect the property for any contributing factors, such as plumbing issues.
For drain flies, we apply specific products to eliminate the flies and larvae in the drains. We treat around food prep areas, making sure to avoid spraying directly on surfaces. Fly traps are placed in key spots where flies are most active.
